I was one of the biggest Dark Shadows fans in the world and I thought it was over and done with until, at a weak moment, I punched my favorite vampire's name into a search engine and found that Dark Shadows is still alive and well! Comments: Javert is more than a good-singer performed-by charecter. He is a symbol of the cold, dry, unmercyfull, unhuman and unsensitive LAW. Javert knows only one truth and that truth is the LAW. Javert is the ideal police-officer: honest, pure, uncorrupted, loyal and deidecated. Javert should not be hate, eventhough he was heartless and comitted suicide he should be forgiven and find his place in heaven (and he did according to the musical). You should read the novel Les-Miserables by Victor Hugo to know and realize who trully Javert is.  [Oh, I have read the novel!  Some years ago, and it was wonderful.  You really seem to understand the Inspector—I enjoyed your site, and I'm also a STAR WARS fan!—M]

Comments: I couldn't resist taking a look at this page, especially after reading The Long Winter of Willie Loomis and you told me you had some other stuff on the Javert page. I have seen Les Mis on stage once, and I cried at all the sad bits, which I never do at musicals. And then, I was inspired to go read Les Mis, the unabridged version, and then found out how long it was - I admire any one who's done this. I look forward to this story! Comments: I`m one of the kids that ran home every day from school back in 1967/68 from 7th grade to watch DS.My sister always says to this day, I look like Willie.Willie and Quentin are my favorite characters. There was always a sadness about the characters in DS, None of them seemed to get what they wanted.I can relate to Willie,From his early entrance into Collinwood,as there was alot of lonliness and pain in the character and his schemes.Until he found people like Maggie,and Carolyn,even Dr.Hoffman who saw below Willie`s hard outer surface into the sensitive, scarred young man he was.Unfortunately he was caught up in the tragedy of Barnabas,and found himself having to go against his own inner convictions while fearing for his life. I believe he and Barnabas`s relationship grew into friendship as Willie realized Barnabas`s affliction was not of his own choosing.... Love the site.... P.S. Comments: Willie has...BY FAR!...been the most UNDER-RATED character in the entire DARK SHADOWS series. I bow to Dan Curtis,Sam Hall,et al...BUT!!!I think they brought Willie on to speed the Barnabas storyline along...but then,when they found out that Johnathan Frid saved the entire show...they kept the Willie character on because they HAD TO. (In the beginning...) John Karlen proved over and over that he could do OSCAR-winning performances as he "skirted" the line between trying to escape Barnabas in the beginning,and ultimately trying to help him in the end. The other characters they made Karlen portray wereall well written and well acted by Karlen...but it was the initial "tenure" as "Willie" that made John Karlen shine...! Forget the "Chicken-Wing" episode... Forget when he made the on-air flub trying to drag Barnabas into The Old House as Grayson Hall tried to give him his lines... Forget when he laughed his butt off bricking up the wall in the Old House's cellar and the idiotic stage-hand walked right into the scene as he delivered one of DS's classic lines... "THIS GIVES ME THE WILLIES..." Curtis and the other writers shipped Willie off to Windcliff when the storyline shifted between timelines. But the CHARACTER of Willie was what made Barnabas Collins all the more illuring...all the more 'misunderstood"..all the more better. Julia,albeit his most trusted friend,served as a "love"interest on the show. Julia,no matter what happend,would ALWAYS come to Barnabas' aid in the end. Through the LEVIATHANS,when Barnabas shunned her while he was "possessed",through Julia's temporary seduction by Gerard after the 1995 time-travel storyline,and right into the L-O-N-G 1840"s "flashback"...Julia served as his best friend and hopeful "lover"... BUT!!!!!! It was always the Willie character who displayed the real TERROR in knowing what Barnabas really was. Through every storyline,through every timeline...John Karlen was able to bring about what each one of us felt upon seeing the sudden, mad, passionate rage when Barnabas HAD to fufill his "blood-lust"... The look of utter shock. The look of HOPELESSNESS at his knowing he could tell NO ONE...The scene's in the beginning where he tried to "help" Maggie get out of the Old House's cellar room... NO ONE besides Karlen could have pulled that off so well. John;DS and the Barnabas character would have never achieved the success it did without YOU there to bring the audience "into" the Old House as you did. Willie may have been evil in the beginning,but your portrail of him after he unchained BC turned Willie Loomis into one of the most fully developed characters ever to be brought to American television... [Thanks so much for sharing your opinion!  I couldn't agree more.  John was always "on" and the best when he played Willie.  Most of the actors did a good job with their characters, but Willie had the most complexity of all.  Great perspective.  I'm so glad you wrote it!—M]

Indeed, the musical has done justice to his character whereas film/theatre have traditionally failed... Have you seen the 1995 French modernization by director Claude Leloch (sp)? It doesn't feature Javert prominantly (my one qualm) but the movie itself is amazing...

I teach French, and as part of the second-year course, I inflict Notre Dame de Paris upon my students in as unabridged a version as I can find. But the librarian lost it over the summer, and I was searching the internet in a (vain) attempt to find an unabridged version online, when I came upon your listing. It's nice to find someone who'd rather read the original. Like you, I don't know whether they allow pilgrims up the towers any more, but I vividly remember the climb as it was fifty years ago, and you are right... it would be worth your eyeteeth to get to do it. Comments: I have your 1st 3 books and also "What if the Night Never Ended..." and I can,t wait for your 4th book. First of all, all the stories are great but I especially love the way you write. I loved "A Long winter for Willie Loomis" and "Spring". Willie has always been my favorite character. Somehow I relate to him, but for the life of me I really don't know why. He's the type of character you just want to hug and love and have as a friend. And John Karlen is a doll, himself. It's not often that I like the actor as much as the character they portray. Comments: Hi, I had earlier passed on the link www.notredameonline.com for the stage musical (French and English productions) of Notre-Dame De Paris. At the time I hadn't seen all the major theatrical films yet, but I've since bought them all on eBay. All were interesting, but like you said, the one with Anthony Quinn stays closest to the book. I agree with you that it seems no one dared to have an evil priest, in the earlier versions! My introduction to NNDP was with the French-Canadian musical I referred to above, which had beautiful music and dance, and a Quasimodo who makes your heart break. While it leaves out a lot of plot, it does follow the story well, although there's no goat and Gringoire isn't particularly funny. (although he is gorgeous, as portrayed by Montreal's Bruno Pelletier!) Anyway, sorry for the length. I'd lost track of your site and found it again by accident -- it's a really great page! [I hope to put that link in when I update.  Thanks so much for your comments!  I wish there was more out there to be seen.  Maybe someday someone will do it right.—M]

Comments: I just happened on this site while looking at all the DS sites available. I joined a DS BBoard and was just curious at what else was out there. I am thrilled to see a site dedicated to Willie. I have ordered several books from Kathleen and have enjoyed "MY BOY WILLIE" especially!! I will keep your fan fiction in mind the next time I order from her or just directly from you. Keep up the good work. PS.. I am also working on a fan novel featuring Willie and other DS character. I have not written anything since college, but the show has inspired me to try my hand at a short novel. I would be glad to hear from you and if you have any advice to share that would be great!!! Other fandoms: star trek the first version with spock and capt mccoy etc....and of course capt kirk.....the russian guy and the scottish guy too....they have some fests in california as well and they reserve front row seats for their fans...maybe dark shadows should start doing that to ensure that you could get a chance to be up close to the stage for once!
